1. Determine the latest version of Nvidia driver available for your graphics card
Nvidia PPA
a. Visit the graphics drivers PPA homepage here and determine the latest versions of Nvidia drivers available which is ‘nvidia-370’ as of January 1, 2017. b. Verify that your graphics card is capable of running the latest drivers. You can search on this link to determine if your graphics card is supported by a driver version. Don’t be so particular about the version part after the dot (after nvidia-370.xxx), just make sure you’re supported on the main version 370.2. Remove older Nvidia driverIf your graphic is supported, you can go ahead and remove all previously installed Nvidia drivers on your system. Enter the following command in terminal.
3. Add the graphics drivers PPA

If there is no output, then your installation has probably failed. It is also possible that the driver is not available in your system’s driver database. You can run the following command to check if your system is running on the open source driver nouveau. If the output is negative for nouveau, then all is well with your installation.
6. Prevent automatic updates that might break the drivers. You can do this in 2 ways –
a. By removing the graphics-drivers PPA from your software sourcesThis will depend on your distro. On Ubuntu, go to your software sources, and then other sources and remove all instances of the graphics-driver PPAs.
b. Or by blocking minor version updates. Enter the following command

To solve the error, Install nvidia-kernel-source before installing driver by following command:
then instal driver by this command:

for your specific case, follow this steps exactly to be able to use the latest nvidia with your specific Nvidia card. I am assuming you have internet:
- Add the Nvidia PPA
- On 18.04, you do not need to update the repositories. After you add a PPA, this is done automatically. Download super duper for mac free. After the update finishes, do this for your nvidia driver:
For Nvidia 390
For Nvidia 396 (The one am using for the 1080 which also applies to your 1060)
There is no need to install the nvidia-settings package since on 18.04, suggested and recommended packages are installed by default (at least to my knowledge) BUT in the case the nvidia-settings package does not get install then do
Also if you want Vulkan, then simply:
After this, you can reboot the computer and you are done. Tex tan saddles serial numbers. Here is a screenshot of this steps working with a 1080 perfectly (Including Vulkan)

I had a similar issue that was resolved by updating the system (not sure if you missed that one), fixing a couple of issues involving broken upgrades (17.10 -> 18.04), adding said ppa, then updating again, then attempting the install.
So:
The key thing that stood out that something was awry was the fact that the packages were there supposedly but refusal to install. As I am much more familiar with the Red Hat Way (TM) of doing things, I took their approach and cleared out my apt cache, reran the update & upgrade commands, then reran the driver installation command, and voila, it worked.
And to clear out the cache:
So to fix your issue, what I would do is:
In case it matters, I had a perfectly good install on 17.10 using whatever Canonical blessed as far as the nvidia proprietary drivers (386, I think). Did the upgrade, and have been hunting out the few issues I could find (popos repos are different now, lots of borked packages I had to remove, then install over again), re-enabling ppas, etc.
Avocent dsview 3. Not a bad upgrade, but carefully documenting what went awry and the proper resolutions. I really am far more comfortable with dnf/yum, and prefer it since in this case it would have rebuilt all metadata upon seeing the new repo. Oh well. Decent release nonetheless sofar. I am used to far worse than a minor hiccup :D
Good luck,
Andrew.

I had the same issue yesterday when upgrading to 18.04.
I had installed Nvidia 390 but I should've installed Nvidia 396.I simply removed the Nvidia 390 by the following command :
sudo apt purge nvidia-390
Then installing the driver which is recommended (the 396).Now, an issue that last for months is finally solved.

Make sure it isn't black-listed by running: Essentials of oceanography 11th edition pdf download.
If that returns a line with
blacklist nvidiafb
, then that's ok, you can ignore that.Running this for me showed a file that blacklisted nvidia. I removed that, and the nvidia drivers actually worked for one. This fixed it for me.
